Old Photos - Nagoya Castle, Purikura

I have some semi-old photos I`d like to share which would belong in other posts, but you all might miss them if I put them there. So here they are! Starting with the day we spent with Asami and Yuuko (I took the photos directly from Facebook, so I haven`t been able to make some of them clearer in Photoshop or do any croppping. Sorry!):

Oh I did something different for once!

The view from my window at night. Left is a 24 hour internet cafe; handy if I ever happen to get locked out after curfew! Top right is apartments I think, and bottom right is a train going past. I never notice them because I`m always so tired.

I don`t even remember where this was taken...it must`ve been the second day here because my hair isn`t straight. I think I`m a bit fed up (of something) already.

Nagoya Castle:

Yes I am in this picture...

Hehe it`s me

Really, really yummy ramen with lots of vegetables from last night. I also decided to eat all of my Easter Egg yesterday. I didn`t realise it had nuts in it...it was so, so good. I missed out on a proper easter :( Next year!

Today I bought already cooked chicken covered in some kind of batter. When I bought it, the lady asked me something (at the time I had no idea what) so I just said yes. It appears she asked whether I wanted it heated up. I didn`t. I really should stop saying yes when I have no idea what`s going on! It could get me into all kinds of trouble!
Since it was heated, I got home and ate it anyway. I was originally planning to add it to the next night`s meal, but ahh well! It was really yummy and I got five pairs of free chopsticks hehe.
I also couldn`t resist the icecream you see there. I`ve seen it on tv ever since I got here...it`s just as yummy as they make it out to be, even though there`s nothing especially different about it, apart from the fact that it has way too much packaging.
At the end of this month Golden Week is coming up. Golden Week is a whole group of holidays that fall in close proximity to one another. Firstly, on Thursday April 29 is Showa Day. Then there is the weekend (Friday is not a holiday). On Monday May 3 it is Constitution Memorial Day, Tuesday May 4 is Greenery Day, and lastly Wednesday May 5 is Children`s Day. A few of the other exchange students are planning to go to Osaka. I refused, I`d much rather save up my money! These past two weeks have been incredibly expensive. Luckily my budget is now back on track. One of the Chinese exchange students is staying behind with me as she has already been to Osaka. Lucky me! I look forward to spending the time getting to know her. We`re going to go shopping together, but I highly doubt I will buy anything unless I somehow scrape by on 1000 yen each week. I highly doubt it, but I`ll do my best!
Oh, one other thing I haven`t told everyone about yet. Nagoya`s trash collection system is really...ergh. So annoying. They have a special system which everyone must abide by. Firstly, there are blue bags, red bags and green bags. The blue bags are for plastic and paper wrappings. However, the plastic and paper must be separated from one another. Ie; I always have two bags open; one for plastic, one for paper. The red bags are for burnable items like food scraps, tissues, etc. I have no idea what the green bags are for, but I have nothing that can`t go in the red or blue bags, hehe. Pet bottles and aluminium cans go in special rubbish bins that we have in the dorm. Closeby to my room there are two drink vending machines. It`s terrible, they are so tempting. I said I wouldn`t drink anymore softdrink once I got to Japan, especially Coke. Oops.
I think that`s it for now!

君がいなくなると、寂しくなる

The last time I went to Japan, I was really home-sick.  Recently I realised that I never really comprehended that I would actually have to leave .  It was quite silly really, now that I think about it.  However it's easy to do. The original plan this time around was for me to get a job, go over, and D would follow in about a month.  Things changed, and now he's decided to go over three months later.  Initally it was no problem, but now that the time for me to depart is getting closer and closer, once again I'm in the same situation.  Only this time, I'm going to be really alone.  No other exchange students who are in the same situation.  Everyday I think about how awesome and hard this is going to be.  But I know I'm going to a really lovely place, I'm going to be making new friends and my Japanese is going to be awesome...eventually! Plus there's Skype.  And until he gets there I'll keep myself busy and in contact, and time will fl...

Maori-chan

Japanese has a lot of different suffixes for names, the most well known being ~san (Yamada-san, Honda-san, etc). In the past it was often translated as Mr., Ms., Mrs., or Miss. However, we obviously don't seem to use these in normal conversation! Well for me at least, the last time I did was in High School. Of course we still see it regularly in letters. I have one JTE who hasn't realised that this little part of English has changed, and there is no need to translate ~san anymore. All the students in her classes are now referred to as Mr. Okada, Ms. Yamaguchi, etc. I want to correct her on this; friends are calling each other Mr and Ms and it's really odd for me. But now I feel it is too late... But what I was getting at! There is another suffix, very famous among anime fans. This is ~chan. It's basically a cute way of saying someone's name. Amon friends, they shorten their name and add on ~chan. For example, Su-chan (Suzuka), Non-chan (Nozomi), and the list goe...

Sweating in Japan

Today I tried to get to the hospital to have my mandatory medical check done, but I had no luck.  It was supposed to be opposite Starbucks, which took me a long time to find (no one said I was to exit the station through the south side...).  A museum was opposite.  Silly me didn't think to look across the road, where I realised it was after re-checking the map at the hotel.  It must've been the humidity, I can't think properly!  Anyway, it's now 11.30am, so there isn't enough time to go back.  The hospital is only open from 9:00am - 12:00pm, and then 5:00pm - 7:00pm, so this is the last chance I have! In the meantime, I read this great article about sweating in Japan.  It is certainly something that is really embarrassing for me.  Not only that, I turn bright red as soon as I start to feel warm *sigh* http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/fl20100724cz.html
